Physics Education goes solar!
Friday 16 April, 1999
Solar physics and especially the 1999 Total eclipse form the themes of the May 1999 issue of Physics Education. Six articles have been compiled under the direction of Deputy Editor Bob Kibble, whose Editorial introduces the topics and authors.
Clare Parnell describes the hidden magic behind the sun's rays, whilst Richard Harrison outlines some of the discoveries about our closest star made possible by the European Space Agency and NASA's joint Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). This year's Physics Education lecturer at the Association for Science Education annual meeting was Gerry Bond of Reading Astronomical Society and he gives his personal impression of Total eclipses for readers. Eclipse expert Francisco Diego provides his view of the spectacle which should unfold on 11 August (weather permitting), followed by David Sang's introduction to the opportunities it will present for students and their teachers! Bob Kibble's own advice on how to make a millennium sundial gives us something to occupy the time whilst waiting for the action to take place!
