The New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopaedia (NGME)

The multimedia english-language NGME encyclopaedia contains over 3600 entries and 600 illustrations selected from "Grolier’s Academic American Encyclopaedia", enriched with sound records, films and animations.
How to use the NGME encyclopaedia?
When you get access to the Encyclopaedia you will see its title page. Click the "Esc" button to get the Features Menu (main menu) and the Main Toolbar. Using the "Search" button on the Main Toolbar you will get to all places in encyclopaedia.
How to search for information?
Here are three ways of searching for information in NGME:
If you are sure you know the name, title, place etc. click the "Search" button on the Main Toolbar and next the "Browse Titles" button or select the "Title List" from the Features Menu. You will get the alphabetical Article Title Index. You can scroll through the Index to select your title. Double-click a title to read an article.
When you are not sure which article covers your subject, select the "Word Search" from the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option). Type in your words related to your subject and link them with the logic operators "and" or "not". Click "Search" from the Main Toolbar or "Enter" from the keyboard. In result you will get information about the number of selected articles covering your subject and their titles. Scroll the list to select an article title. Double-click or press "Enter" to read an article.
If you are not exactly sure, what are you interested in, use the "Knowledge Tree" ("branches" of knowledge). Select the "Knowledge Tree" from the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option). You can search for articles according to the branch of knowledge. There are following branches available: Art, Geography, History, Exact Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology.
How to use the "Timeline"?
Timeline - the index of events covering the various branches of knowledge in the chronological arrangement from the year 40 000 B.C. Click the "Timeline" button on the Features Menu to open the index of events. Type in the year you are interested in and the NGME will bring you to that year.
How to find a sound?
Click the "Sound" button on the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option). You will get the sound index. You can select from the sounds of animals, birds, musical-instruments and from the excerpts of musical works and historical speeches. Double-click a sound title and press "play" to hear that sound.
How to play a Multimedia Map?
The multimedia maps cover the history of America. Click the "Multimedia Maps" on the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option) to get the index of maps. Double-click to select a category from the index. Double-click a map title to open it. Press "play" to play it.
How to find an illustration or a photograph?
The NGME has more than 3000 pictures, indexed by subject. Click the "Picture" on the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option) to get the index of photographs from the following subject groups: animals, famous artists, history, media, medicine, army, politics, religion, science and technology, social sciences, sport and the Earth. Double-click a category, you are interested in, from the index and then double-click the titles of individual pictures to see them. Click the caption button to read the picture’s caption.
How to find a film (a video)?
Select the "Videos" button from the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option) to see the index of videos. The NGME provides with videos about: animals’ lives, historical events, plants, science and technology, the Cosmos conquering , presidents of the United States of America. Double-click a category you are interested in and then double-click a video title and press "play" to see it.
How to find and start an animation?
Select the "Animations" button from the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option) to see the index of animated illustrations. The NGME presents animations enriched with a text read by a lector and dealing with such subjects like: human body, mechanical processes, natural phenomenons and simple machines. Double-click a category you are interested in and then double-click an animation title and press "play" to see that animation.
How to find information about researches and discoveries?
Select the "Knowledge Explorer" from the Features Menu or the Main Toolbar (the "Search" option) to see the index of researches and discoveries in such fields of knowledge like: art, geography, nature and science. Described subjects are presented in the audio-visual form.
